Nigeria Quota System as a policy!

Last week, National Teachers’ Institute announced that about 80 per cent of teachers in Northern Nigeria were not qualified to teach.
Just before that, the Federal Ministry of Education had announced the cut-off marks for admission into the Federal Government Colleges, known as Unity Schools, with the shocking piece of information that while the cut-off mark was as high as 139 for a Southern state like Anambra, it was as low as two, yes two, (out of a possible 200 marks) for pupils of a Northern state like Yobe.

According to the Federal Character Commission:
“In 1954 when Nigeria opted for a federal form of government, the concept of Quota System as a policy was adopted in the recruitment of persons into the officers’ corps of the armed forces and the police as well as in admissions into educational institutions,” to promote a fair representation and close the existing disparities among the parts of the nation. On the surface, it is a good idea, because it ensures that no single area gets into federal establishments to the detriment of other areas.

However, over the decades, it has dealt a heavy blow on the psyche of Northern Nigeria. Man is naturally competitive. Man performs at his peak in times of difficulty: the maxim “necessity is the mother of invention” captures it. The collapse of communism bears testimony to this. Remove competition among people, provide amenities for them equally, reward them equally — no matter their individual contributions — and the will to excel evaporates. Even though the Federal Character policy was established with good intentions, those who created it and those who still support its continuance are indirectly not wishing the North well.

In the 2007 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, Imo State produced more candidates seeking admission into the universities than all the 19 Northern states put together. That is not just shocking but dangerous. The top five states with the highest number of candidates were Southern states. They are as follows: Imo 93,065; Anambra 64,689; Delta 61,580; Edo 57,754; Akwa Ibom 47,928; while the lowest five states were Northern states as follows: Sokoto 3,925; Taraba 3,832; Zamfara 2,904; Jigawa 2,541; and Yobe 2,516.

The trend remains virtually the same year after year. For example, last year, the top three states were Imo (123,865 candidates); Delta (88,876); and Anambra (71,272); while the last three states were Northern states.

Last month, UNESCO released a report that ranked Nigeria as the country with the most number of children out of school: a whopping 10.5 million – the population of Portugal! No doubt, a larger proportion of these children would be from the North. Some blame the almajiri system for this. It is a system that was created to offer young boys the opportunity of being groomed and tutored by a religious leader, so as to grow into exemplary members of society. But it has gone awry, making these young boys roam the streets begging, with nobody to direct them, and then growing up into angry youths that can be used to cause mayhem at the drop of a hat.

Right from birth, the Northern child is disadvantaged. While his Southern counterpart grows up attending school, the Northern child does not. Through education and entrepreneurship, the Southern youth grows up with more opportunities in life. He knows that he can only succeed in life through excellence. That drive makes a southerner successful and he trains his children in good schools, instilling self-reliance and competitiveness in them, thereby improving the chances of the children even succeeding more than him. The average Yoruba person does not want an Igbo person to beat him in any field of human endeavour and vice versa; that spurs both sides to excellence. The average Urhobo person, Efik person or Bini person does not want an Igbo person, or Yoruba person or Ibibio or Ijaw to beat him. So there is healthy rivalry among them, which leads to excellence and success.

On the contrary, with no education, no artisanal skills and lack of competitive spirit, the Northern child grows up with extremely low chances of success. He cannot secure a decent job; he cannot even offer specialised services of an artisan; he is afraid to start off a small-scale business because he virtually has nobody to understudy. The only available job is the most difficult and yet the least remunerated: the work of a labourer. He supplies water in 25-litre kegs to people who live on the fourth floors with no elevators for N50 per keg. He uses a wheelbarrow or tub to move sand and concrete at construction sites; he stays around markets to help those who have bought heavy items like tubers of yam and bags of rice to move these items from deep inside the market to their vehicles or even home. And for all this hard labour, he gets paid pittance.

As he renders this poorly paid service to people, does anybody expect him to be happy with the successful people around him? It is impossible.

The Northerner is not less intelligent than his Southern counterpart, neither is he weaker or less creative. How many people can beat the business acumen and creativity of Alhaji Aliko Dangote, or the automobile design ingenuity of Jelani Aliyu, or the academic intelligence of Nasir el-Rufai, or the resoluteness of Col. Abubakar Umar and Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, or the football skills of Tijani Babangida and Daniel Amokachi, or the musical talent of Innocent Tuface Idibia, or the organisational and leadership abilities of Sir Ahmadu Bello?

Some would claim that Islam is the reason for the North’s poor embrace of education. If that were so, why is a predominantly Christian state like Taraba found among the states with the lowest literacy rate? Saudi Arabia, the headquarters of Islam, is very education-focused with a literacy rate of 85 per cent, ranking 116th of 194 countries. Indonesia, the most populated Muslim country in the world, is education-savvy with 92 per cent literacy rate. The United Arab Emirates has 90 per cent literacy rate. Nigeria has 72 per cent literacy rate, but should actually be in the 90s.

The danger in having the North lag behind is that Nigeria has to always move at the pace of the North or put appropriately, lag behind with it. Nigeria is a unit and cannot move and leave some parts behind. Again, the more the South moves ahead of the North, the more conflicts will arise between the North and the South. While the North will feel that the South is cornering the joint resources of the nation, the South will feel the North is pulling it backwards.

One other factor that has worked against the North is its long years of ruling the country. There is a form of complacency that comes from the feeling of “We are in charge.” At such periods, you let your guards down; you don’t complain so as not to overheat the administration of your “kinsman”. But when your brother is not in charge, you feel left out and thereby complain the loudest of marginalisation. Those in charge bend backwards to satisfy you with different projects. The North should de-emphasise its focus on the presidency. Forty years of Northern presidency – civilian or military – have not offered the North any tangible advantage.

Those who hate the truth would rise in righteous anger, seeing this treatise as the work of an enemy rather than digesting the hard truth and finding solutions to a worsening problem. And those who love ethnic bashing will quickly see it as advantage to start shooting at the North. But the truth is that the progress of the North will serve both the interest of the North and South.

There should be a two-way approach to this problem. The North should set up a 20-year target to catch up with the South in education and entrepreneurship. The Northern states must make it an offence for any parent to deny their child education. The state governors and local government chairmen need to start a programme of sending as many Northern children as possible to Southern states for their secondary and tertiary education. The new Northern youths need to leave their comfort zone: compete with their Southern counterparts, interact with them and imbibe some of the ways of the Southern people.

The second aspect concerns uneducated youths who may no longer want to go to school. Lack of education is no impediment to success. The Northern governors and local council chairmen should start an intensive skills acquisition programme for the youths. A labourer cannot train another, neither can he rise much in life if he continues as an unskilled labourer. But someone who has learnt masonry, tiling, sewing, vehicle repairing, generator repairing, painting, plumbing, etc, can grow to a level where he will have apprentices. Massive construction takes place non-stop across the federation. Nigerians have an unquenchable appetite for cars and fashion. So, they need these services. That way, the number of skilled workers increases; the earning power of the people increases; and such people can afford a better life for their children, gradually changing the face of their community.

Quota system or federal character is derogatory and has worsened things for the North. Every Northerner who loves the North must tell Nigeria to stop insulting the North with this federal character bait. The North must refuse anything offered it on a platter: it is either a Greek gift or a poisoned chalice. The North should save itself by rejecting this insulting Unity Schools’ cut-off marks that cut it off from development and modernity.

HOW TO IMPROVE YOURSELF.

Real keys to self-improvement!

Every now and again I meet very intelligent and highly skilled people at different workshop or seminars, I hear them speak and immediately know they are given to wide and deep study and are quite exposed. Many of this people travel and have in one time or the other worked overseas, some with multinationals and many others in very well structured and sophisticated organization, they speak with impressive reasoning and are very logical in there postulation, argument and suggestions. You just immediately know that these guys are made up of very good stuff. But I look at their career situation and challenges and wonder how people of such level of thinking and reasoning can become chief pray of career frustration and underperformance, then gradually I began to understand that having something in your mind doesn’t necessary mean you apply it in your life. You may know the truth about a lot of things but can profit from it because you apply or handle this truth in your situation. For example a man may know that a lady is desperately chasing after does not really love or want him she’s just interested in benefits, in money and all the gift, yet he can’t make a decision on this truth to walk away, he’s too weak in love to do that.

Habit, mind precept, emotional and sentimental factors, identity crises and their opinion of so called important people of misapplication of obvious truth difficult. I think one of the reasons why we really don’t improve despite all we know is reluctant to accept our fault and weaknesses, we prefer to ignore this weaknesses and pretend they are not there rather than accept them and try to subdue them. It’s funny but very true that we easily see the weaknesses we are equally guilty of in orders and gladly Jorge them on it. Have heard many lazy bosses calling their subordinate lazy, have heard many ignorant leaders calling their followers ignorant, have heard many selfish people calling others selfish, have heard many greedy people calling others greedy, have heard many immoral spiritual leaders call others sinful and have heard many corrupt and undisciplined Nigerians refers to political office holders and government officials as corrupt.
Hmmm… I think generally as people we are slow to accepting in our negatives and repugnant to applying quick changes until we are forced by people or circumstances to do so. When you refuse to accept a weakness or a challenge you hardly make the move to improve on it, for instance, I had quite an exploitative and abusive upbringing, I wasn’t particularly anyone favorite and it was made clear in every way possible hence, I grew up an angry fellow, I react very quickly and aggressively to any treatment indicative of subjugation, exploitation and cheating, I couldn’t stand anyone trying to take advantage of me, I will fight and defend myself in all possible way. At times I get so angry and I become verbally very toxic, because of this weakness I kept a lot of distance from everyone because familiarity indeed bring contempt and I couldn’t handle contempt but with time subsequent to pressure from my close friends, counsels from my spiritual leaders, severe criticism from my colleagues and team members, I began to work on it to become better. I think am getting better, I believe my team members can attest to the fact that am friendlier, more considerate, tolerant and understanding than I use to be. I’ve learn to accept the fact that people treat me the way they do not because of whom I am but because of how they are, so it’s their problem not mine.
Dear friends to go far in life and your career pursuit, you must long for and desire rapid improvement. Improvement is only applicable to people and things that are yet to at their best hence, we all need to improve, except you believe you can’t be better than the way you are right now in career, relationship, family, life, finance and relevance.
Looking at some certain behaviors that will rapidly improve your overall life quality and enhance your pursuit of excellent.

     1.     BE ADAPTIVE AND FLEXIBLE.
You are not the absolute reference and SI unit for anything in this life, yet it’s good to be principled and oppose personal norms and believe systems, but please don’t impose or enforce your own believe on someone else or other people. Please am not saying don’t advocate or promote what you believe, it’s actually the best way of doing things but what am saying is don’t condemn, reject, criticize or Judge others if they fail to agree with you, your stand or your judgment. Life I believe is about outcome and result, people may doubt your opinion or position on certain issues but no one can doubt a wonderful result or performance. For instance, I have a quite number of friends and colleagues who smoke and do a lot of alcohol, I don’t smoke and I don’t do alcohol, this of course does not make me better or superior in anyway, we are just different in our personal believe and principles, occasionally I warn them on the danger and consequence of the intake of these substances, they already know so it is pointless of rubbing it in. I may be strong in this area but they may be stronger and better at managing their anger and temper an area where am still working on, don’t be a judge be a helper, an encourager, a coach. Everyone cant an in fact shouldn’t be like you so be adaptive and flexible.

2.     ADMIT WHEN YOU ARE WRONG.
One of the things many people find very hard to accept is the truth about their mistakes and error, we love to explain away our error and mistakes, we hate to take the blame and responsibilities. To us, everything is hardly our fault, something or someone must be responsible for that wrong doing, error or mistakes. In this part of the world  when we realize no one or situation can be blame for our obvious mess, we put it straight on Satan, the devil must be the reason behind this my misconduct, it can’t be me, it must be the devils work. It is the devil that pushed me (what a joke…). Dear friends, accept when you are wrong, take responsibilities. Start every probe into a negative development with you as the first candidate under scrutiny. Ask what you could have done different to avert the mess, don’t keep blaming your subordinate, your boss, top management or your team members for everything wrong , start with you. These I promise is the best way to improve your performance, admit when wrong , find it easy to say I made a mistake, anytime you do its refreshing I tell you and it immediately triggers in you the quest for  remedy and solution.

 3.     CHANGE YOUR MIND.
Many of us today have continued for many years in career part and life journey that are frustrating, tough and dissatisfying. We probably ended up on this journey due to poor judgment or peer pressure and suddenly we know we have made a huge mistake. Please do not continue on that sorrowful part, change your mind. Many single folks today are in very terrible and abusive relationship that they know will eventually result in crisis and disaster should they end up getting married but they believe they have invested too much in emotion, finance, sacrifice and years to give up on the relationship or the person involved, they can’t change their mind, where will they start from they usually say, what will people think of me they ask, hence, they are willing to endure over 50 years of an unhappy and totally frustrating marriage and the possibilities of a divorce or even untimely death, raising dysfunctional kids that will become menace to the society because they are too weak to change their minds on a wrong choice in friendship, courtship and dating. They are too blind emotionally to see better opportunities with better people that will lead to the marriage of their dreams, how triaged. Hmmm… take for instance, if you are supposed to go for an occasion in porthacourt from Lagos and many hours into the journey you suddenly realized that the vehicle you boarded is actually heady for Abuja, it will be absolutely foolish to continue the journey to Abuja no matter how far gone, because your occasion is at porthacourt. Change your mind no matter how far gone so as not to end up in a wrong destination, it is far better to arrive late at your occasion than not to show up because you wouldn’t change your mind when you missed it.

4.     ACCEPT YOUR IMPERFECT STATE.
You are not perfect, you will make mistakes again and again, it human to hair. Accepting your imperfect state is a mark of intelligence and courage, the willing to adapt with new information, forgive yourself and move on, you can’t change the past, so focus on building a better future.

Wishing you all the best in your career and life in general as you apply some of these principles. Keep winning and see you at the top.

Best Regards.

Life Journey!!!

Life Journey!!!

We need to absolutely take charge of our rights in life, Determine where you want to go and where you want to stop before you start moving. You must be clear on your journey and destination.
Many of us are not so sure about our life or journey and our career path hence, we get so easily distracted by fags and fun, we take every advice or curtained every fear you heard in any direction, we don’t know where we are going in life and in career.
Dear friends set a destination goal today!
Life journey can be liken to a story of a young lady that is been taught how to ride a bicycle;
The first lesson is for her to:
·         Be ready mentally for the training
·         Be patience enough for the training
·         Be focus at all time
·         Maintain balance at all time
·         Keep moving
·         Hold firm and control the
In life you need to be ready at all time to face life challenges and whenever you are faced with one, be patience enough to gather enough information that will help you throughout that period.
Most importantly you have to be focus always.  Challenges will come and when they come do not be distracted or discouraged. Many of us keep looking at our past, our history, our upbringing and won’t let go our hurt, the disappointments from people who were mean to us, we are filled with hanger, hate, vengeance and the weals to prove something, yet this emotion keep frustrating and distracting our focus on the future.
Let the past go and focus on your future, you can’t chance the past anyway. Most of us bother ourselves so much to the extent to trying to impress or oppress people who don’t even care you exist. Your success or failure means nothing to them; they are too busy with their own life and challenge to think much of you. In fact you eventually succeed and become important they want to return to celebrate with you indeed, their real motive will be how they can take advantage of your success and use you to solve their personal problems and meet their personal needs, so why bother with people and events of your path.

Anytime you fall during life journey, you must learn to always stand up, dust yourselves and keep moving, just like riding a bicycle, you must keep peddling  till you get to that point where you've raised enough momentum on speed for the bike to keep moving without your peddling anymore, then the bike attain a state of auto cruise. Many of us in life when ridding against a heel or an elevation in life, we peddle for a while and stop. But the lesson is peddle for a while, don’t stop again, each time we stop we start rolling backward because it is a slope. When you are attaining your height in life and career, it is dangerous to stop half way, when you stop halfway you may have to start up over again. Riding to a top is usually an uphill task, it requires:
  •     Determination
  •     Hard work
  •     Persistence
  •    And courage
If you don’t give up, you could end up becoming a success story.
Don’t give up on that program, exam, new business, new skill or career path. You must keep pushing till you get to the top, if you don’t want to return to the base, because life is like that.

I assure you, a season is coming when you will be cruising without sweat if you don’t give up now. That's just the way it is, life is like that.

Now that you have learned this why not encourage others around you to learn the same thing and allow them to increase their wealth of knowledge by sharing this site or write up with them.

Best Regards.
